The formats mentioned above can be also extracted automatically from popular archives: 

• .zip, .rar, .eml (different e-mail messages formats), .arj, .7z, .tar, .gz.

Of course, you can just paste the necessary text right from the Clipboard.

DIGEST.desktop 2008 can extract text from PDF format and analyze it. But only in that way, when text is really text and no image.
