What does it mean - PDF with text and PDF with image?

A PDF-file is not data. It is a program which “draws” documents, using a virtual stack processor. Like any programs, it can be written in many ways. Most converters seek commands for texts in PDF-programs. But text can also be placed into images, which vice versa can be placed in document’s by other commands. In order to find and recognize texts in such documents, it is necessary to use OCR-technologies. We can detect PDF with image indirectly by the next rule: if you cannot select a text in a document opened in Acrobat Reader, and this text is not protected by copy to clipboard, it is most likely a part of a picture (PDF with image). Most frequently it is a scanned document, converted to PDF.

Is PDF a good format for text storing and processing?

On one hand, PDF is good for an identical representation of a document on the screen and on the printer, on the other hand it is bad for storing text information. This format doesn´t have a conception of  "text workflow". The text can be placed on a page in any order and in any way, even without using commands of drawing by usual fonts. Certainly, the majority of programs print text on the PDF-printer in a reasonable order. But even in this case, the text is presented in form of lines-scraps. We can not glue them together correctly in all cases. Also, not all programs place all the necessary decoding information into a text file, using not-ASCII symbols. We shall improve our algorithms of working with PDF, however, for storage and processing of text information we recommend to use other formats.
